Abstrakt: This research study aimed to find out how the local merchants in the Borobudur temple use English to interact with foreign tourists. A qualitative study in the form of a case study was done in conducting the research. The data was collected through interviews with local merchants and field notes for the observation to strengthen the data. The interactive model constructed by Miles and Huberman (1994) was then used for analyzing the data qualitatively. The findings reveal that local merchants would use English when they meet foreign tourists, no matter where they are from. Furthermore, a template that consists of (1) greeting, (2) promoting, (3) negotiating, and (4) taking farewell is used by the local merchants as the interaction procedure for tourists.
