Abstrakt: The research employed a mixed methods embedded experimental model with the primary objective of assessing the enhancement of metacognitive abilities through problem-based learning (PBL) in the context of the temperature and heat topic. The rationale behind this study was the relatively low initial metacognitive ability test scores among high school students in Tulungagung, registering at 39.4%. The research focused on thirty-six students from XI MIPA 2 at SMAN 1 Gondang Tulungagung. The collected data encompassed both qualitative and quantitative aspects, including pretests, posttests, observations, and field notes. Quantitative data underwent analysis using effect size tests, n-gain tests, and paired t-tests, while qualitative data were subjected to coding and data reduction. The outcomes of the research indicated an average N-gain score of 0.51 and an effect size of 2.33 for metacognitive ability. Notably, students exhibited positive improvements in each metacognitive ability indicator. The findings suggest that educators can effectively integrate problem-based learning models across various subjects, considering the specific characteristics of the students involved.
