Assessing secondary students' problem-solving skills in biology context.

Abstrakt: Problem-solving skills are essential to be mastered by students to ensure they can handle various similar or different problems satisfactorily. Students should independently find solutions, produce meaningful knowledge, and provide substantial experience. The research aims to analyse secondary students' problem-solving skills in a biology context. This research is a quantitative descriptive study conducted in September 2021 at three secondary schools in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Measurement of problem-solving skills using an essay-shaped test instrument integrated with problem-solving indicators according to Ge & Land (2004). The instruments were validated by expert appraisal. The results of this study showed that student problem-solving is low, as indicated by the average problem-solving of SMA Negeri 1 Kubung student who obtained a score of 1.9 in the "learning" category and a score of 47.5 in the "inferior" category. Students of SMA Negeri 1 Gunung Talang obtained a score of 1.7 in the "learning" category and a score of 42.5 in the "inferior" category, then students of SMA Negeri 1 Bukit Sundi obtained a score of 1.6 in the "currently studying" category and a score of 40 at "very poor." The average creative thinking of the three schools is 1.7 in the "learning" category and 40 in the "inferior" category. Based on the result, students haven't mastered problem-solving skills yet.
