The article "Setting the Record Straight on Racial Wealth Inequality" challenges the mainstream economic view on racial wealth inequality. It argues that the focus on human capital and earnings fails to account for the uneven transmission of resources across generations. Despite increases in median wealth among Black households, Black-White wealth inequality has remained unchanged or slightly increased over the past 50 years. The article highlights the inadequacy of closing the earnings gap as a solution and emphasizes the importance of considering intergenerational wealth transfers and gifts. It also discusses the impact of tax policies and suggests alternative proposals, such as reparations, to address the wealth gap. The article underscores the need to understand the cumulative impact of racial history and uneven resource transmission in explaining economic inequality between Black and White Americans.
