Abstrakt: A study conducted at Arrowe Park Hospital examined the prevalence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with total contact casts (TCCs). TCCs are commonly used in the management of acute charcot neuroathropathy and neuropathic ulcers. The study found that out of 143 TCC episodes in 104 patients, only one case of TCC-related VTE was documented. The researchers concluded that the prevalence of VTE in the TCC setting is similar to that of the general population, possibly due to the weight-bearing nature of TCCs. They suggest that while all patients should be individually assessed for VTE risk, routine chemical thromboprophylaxis is not necessary for patients with TCCs. [Extracted from the article]
