A recent study from the University of Catania in Italy explores the topic of megalencephaly, a developmental disorder characterized by abnormal brain growth and neurological dysfunction. Megalencephaly can affect the entire brain or just one hemisphere, known as hemimegalencephaly. The disorder is associated with early onset epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders, behavioral problems, and autism spectrum disorder. There are three main groups of megalencephaly disorders: idiopathic or benign, metabolic, and anatomical. Neuroimaging is crucial for diagnosis, and genetic causes should be considered in cases of anatomical megalencephaly. [Extracted from the article] |
