Researchers from Federal University Santa Catarina in Florianopolis, Brazil, conducted a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy of epidurally administered magnesium combined with local anesthetics for postoperative pain control. They analyzed seventeen studies and found that magnesium sulfate delayed the time to the first postoperative analgesic request, decreased 24-hour opioid consumption, and reduced early postoperative pain intensity. However, the meta-analyses showed imprecision and inconsistency, resulting in very low certainty of effect estimates. The study was published in the Brazilian Journal of Anesthesiology.
