A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Georgia focused on the incidence of a live attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium vaccine strain in broiler products. The researchers developed a PCR assay to screen isolates and differentiate between field strains and the vaccine strain. They found that between 2016 and 2022, 5.97% of Salmonella Typhimurium isolates of chicken origin were identified as the vaccine strain. The study highlights the need to distinguish between vaccine strains and strains responsible for causing human illness, especially with forthcoming regulations on Salmonella control.
