A report from the Robert Koch Institute in Germany provides an analysis of two decades of national surveillance data on giardiasis, a parasitic infection that causes gastroenteritis. The study found that giardiasis is the most common food- and waterborne parasitic infection in Europe. The incidence of giardiasis in Germany has been gradually decreasing since 2013, with a sharp decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is commonly assumed that giardiasis in Germany is imported, the study highlights the importance of autochthonous (domestic) cases. The research suggests that further investigation into dietary, behavioral, and environmental risk factors is needed to enhance infection prevention measures for autochthonous giardiasis.
