A recent study conducted by the Institute of Biomedicine Sevilla (IBiS) in Seville, Spain, has found that melatonin, a natural compound found in animals and plants, may have a positive impact on lipid metabolism and reduce cardiovascular risk. The study involved mice deficient in apolipoprotein E (ApoE-/-) that were fed a Western diet and treated with different concentrations of melatonin. The results showed a significant reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and an improvement in cardiovascular risk indexes in mice treated with higher concentrations of melatonin. The study suggests that melatonin could be a promising candidate for preventing cardiovascular risk. [Extracted from the article] |
