A recent study conducted by researchers at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Saudi Arabia explored the relationship between celiac disease and periodontitis. The study involved 23 participants with celiac disease who were following a gluten-free diet and 23 control subjects. The researchers found that celiac disease patients on a gluten-free diet had better periodontal health compared to the control subjects. However, increased levels of certain interleukins (IL-17A, IL-18, and IL-1B) were associated with periodontitis in both the celiac disease and control groups. Additionally, the study found that serum IgA levels were inversely associated with periodontitis clinical manifestations and salivary inflammatory mediators in celiac disease patients on a gluten-free diet.
