This article presents a study on the evolution of genetic resources of domestic animals in Romania. The study focuses on identifying animal breeds that are at risk of abandonment and analyzing animal genetic resources in terms of total herds and genetic quality determination programs. The data from the National Institute of Statistics indicates a decline in the total livestock of cattle and pigs, while sheep and goats have seen slight increases. The study identifies 14 breeds at risk of abandonment, primarily native breeds with lower production potential. Genetic quality determination programs have been approved for these breeds to maintain genetic diversity and improve productivity and disease resistance. The National Agency for Animal Husbandry (NAAH) has implemented various initiatives to improve genetic breeding programs for different breeds, such as the Salers, Jersey, and Romanian Buffalo. However, there has been a decrease in the number of ewes and goats registered in production control programs. The NAAH has implemented conservation programs for local breeds that are at risk of abandonment, aiming to maintain genetic diversity and increase the herd of purebred animals. The decline of local breeds in Romania can be attributed to low production potential and policies that favor breeds with higher yields. It is important to maintain genetic diversity for the productivity, adaptability, and resilience of agricultural ecosystems. [Extracted from the article] |
