This article, published in the journal Artificial Organs, presents a case report of a 64-year-old patient with a giant compressive goiter-related difficult airway. The patient required emergency surgery but had a high risk of intubation failure. The article describes the perioperative challenges and management of this unconventional case, which involved the use of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) despite the absence of cardiac function impairment. The patient had a favorable outcome, and the article discusses the rationale behind the choice of VA-ECMO and the anesthetic management strategies used. [Extracted from the article] |
