The article explores the perception of the north of England as distinct from the rest of the country, both culturally and politically. It discusses the deep-rooted historical roots of this perception, including the industrial revolution and regional inequalities. The article also examines the role of northern identity and its relationship with Englishness, as well as the political implications of this distinctiveness. It concludes by suggesting that the future of a politics of northernness is uncertain and will be influenced by evolving governance arrangements and the changing political landscape.
