A patent has been issued to Exo Imaging Inc. for imaging devices with electronically configurable ultrasonic imagers. These devices can be used to image internal tissue, bones, blood flow, or organs of human or animal bodies. The imaging devices transmit a signal into the body and receive a reflected signal to create images. The patent describes the use of piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducers (pMUTs) that are fabricated on a semiconductor wafer substrate, which are less bulky, cheaper to manufacture, and have higher performance compared to conventional transducers.
