A recent study conducted by researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine examined the design and adaptation of pay-for-performance (P4P) schemes in Brazil. The study found that there was significant variation in the design choices made by municipalities, which affected relationships within the municipalities and teams. Challenges were primarily related to fairness in terms of who received the incentives and the size of the incentives. The researchers concluded that it is important to consider local context and ensure inclusivity, fairness, and transparency in the design and implementation of P4P schemes.
