A systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by the University of Pretoria in South Africa found that gastroenteritis viruses are the leading cause of diarrhea in children worldwide. The study analyzed data from 33 eligible studies published between 2003 and 2023 in African countries. The results showed that rotavirus was the most prevalent virus, followed by norovirus, adenovirus, sapovirus, astrovirus, and aichivirus. The study concluded that improved rotavirus vaccination and surveillance are needed to effectively control and manage cases of viral diarrhea in African children under five years of age.
