Abstrakt: The current experiment was performed at Agricultural Research Station, Binjhagiri, Chhatabar, Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (Deemed to be University) during Summer, 2021, taking twenty sesame genotypes. The investigation was conducted following randomized block design with 3 replications. Analysis of variance revealed significant variation among the genotypes for all the eleven traits studied indicating the opportunity for genetic selection for desirable traits. The values of phenotypic coefficient of variation were reported to be greater than the values of genotypic coefficient of variation for all the characters indicating that environmental factors cause the apparent variation in addition to genotypes under field conditions. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean for traits like number of capsules/plant, number of branches/plant, seed yield/plant, inter-node length, plant height and 1000-seed weight reflected the role of additive gene action highlighting the importance of those traits for effective selection. The concurrent studies on correlation and path analysis identified traits like 1000-seed weight, capsule width, number of capsules/plant and capsule length as the key components for exercising meaningful selection in sesame. Divergence study revealed the major contribution of plant height, number of capsules/plant and days to 50% flowering towards total diversity in the population. Considering the inter-cluster distance, hybridisation programme may be carried out between the genotypes from cluster III and cluster IV to achieve maximum heterotic hybrids and to produce a broader range of variation in the segregating population.
