Abstrakt: This article discusses a study on the chemoselective reduction of barbiturates using photochemically excited flavin catalysts. The researchers explored the use of samarium(II) iodide and reduced flavins as reductants for barbiturates with multiple carbonyl groups. They found that flavin-mediated reduction led to the formation of alicyclic hemiaminals, providing a new method for reductive cyclizations. The study also compared flavin catalysis to the well-established SmI2 reductant and found that flavin catalysis proceeds differently, making it useful for various transformations that require reductive activation of carbonyl functional groups.
