The article discusses the development of a new technique called LaserSAFE, which uses fluorescence confocal microscopy (FCM) to analyze positive surgical margins (PSMs) in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) specimens. The technique involves scanning the entire posterolateral surface of the prostate using a portable laser confocal microscope. Preliminary results show that LaserSAFE has a sensitivity of 87.5% and specificity of 98.1% for diagnosing PSMs, with almost perfect agreement with final pathology analysis. The authors believe that LaserSAFE could be a valuable alternative to the time-consuming and resource-intensive NeuroSAFE technique for margin assessment during RARP. [Extracted from the article] |
