Researchers from Sapienza University of Rome have conducted a study on secreted matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their relationship to gingival and peri-implant inflammation. The study found that the concentration of active MMP-8 (aMMP-8) was higher in peri-implant sulcular fluid (PISF) compared to gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), and it remained unchanged after non-surgical treatment. The researchers also observed a positive correlation between aMMP-8 concentration and clinical parameters such as probing depth and bleeding on probing index. The findings suggest that aMMP-8 concentration in GCF/PISF could be a useful diagnostic tool for identifying and screening the risk of peri-implant diseases. After non-surgical therapy, the concentration of aMMP-8 in GCF significantly decreased, while it remained mostly unchanged in PISF. [Extracted from the article] |
