This patent application describes a system and method for fractionally treating tissue using electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to achieve skin rejuvenation. The system includes an EMR source, a beam shaper, an optic, and a window assembly. The EMR beam is shaped into a transverse ring energy profile and is converged to a focal region within the tissue. The window assembly cools the tissue and contains a coolant that does not absorb the EMR beam. The method involves cooling the tissue, generating the EMR beam, and converging it to the focal region.
