Ticks are known vectors for transmitting tick-borne diseases in British Columbia (BC). Tick bites and concerns about tick-borne diseases are common complaints in healthcare settings, especially during warmer months. This article provides information to clinicians about the ticks commonly found in BC and the diseases they may transmit to humans. It also discusses the management of tick bites and tick-borne diseases, including the prompt removal of ticks and the monitoring of early symptoms. The prevalence of ticks and tick-borne diseases varies by geography in BC, with different tick species associated with different diseases. Antibiotic prophylaxis for Lyme disease is usually not required for tick exposures originating in BC due to the low prevalence of the disease in BC ticks. The article also provides resources for tick identification and pathogen analysis. [Extracted from the article] |
