The term hydroxyapatite Ca5(PO4)3(OH) is naturally oeeurring mineral and ehemieally identieal to the mineral eonstituent of bones and solid tissues of mankind and mammals used for bone grafting, augmentation in maxillofaeial surgery and in orthopedies as spaee filling material. However, the brittleness of pure HA materials narrows its applieation only to low-load bearing applieations. Generally, for the improvement of the meehanieal properties and the struetural one, hydroxy apatite is subjeeted to the sintering proeess. Thus, an optimization of the meehanieal properties and miero strueture of hydroxy apatite through a suitable ehoiee of sintering parameters is under investigation. This paper presents the effeet of sintering temperature on meehanieal properties of hydroxy apatite eompaets. A ehemieal preeipitation method was successfully employed to prepare hydroxy apatite powder from waste egg shells. The eggshell derived HA is a eost effeetive bio-eeramie for biomedieal applieations and an effeetive material reeyeling teehnology. HA derived from egg shells and 5% organie additive was eold uniaxially pressed at 2500 psi for 3 min isothermal hold. The resulting eompaets were sintered at different temperatures from 900-1100 °C for dwell time of 2 h. The samples were eharaeterized by analyzing miero struetural analysis, eompressive strength, porosity and radial shrinkage. Compressive strength and porosity was inereased with inerease in sintering temperature, while radial shrinkage was deereased with inereasing sintering temperature. Struetural analysis showed that inter eonneeted pores were developed and a material with inter eonneeted pores is thought to be a good eandidate as seaffold material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
