A recent study conducted at Assam Medical College in Assam, North East India, examined the occurrence of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in newborns. G6PD deficiency is a common cause of jaundice among neonates and is closely linked to various types of anemia. The study found that among the 630 screened neonates, 48 were found to be G6PD deficient, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.4:1. The mean G6PD enzyme activity in deficient neonates was significantly lower than in normal cases. This study highlights the significant occurrence of G6PD deficiency in newborns, including females.
