Abstrakt: | A study conducted by researchers at the Universidad del Quindio in Latin America explored the potential anti-Entamoeba histolytica effect of Ricinus communis (castor oil), a traditional medicine used for the treatment of intestinal amebiasis. The researchers evaluated the in vitro cysticidal effect of castor oil extracts on E. histolytica and found that the three commercial castor oil compounds tested had significant cysticidal effects and altered cyst morphology after 10 hours of exposure. The effective dose 50% (EC50) ranged between 35 and 50 mg/ml. The study suggests that castor oil pharmaceutical products have promising anti-E. histolytica properties, but further clinical trials are needed to confirm their efficacy.
