A recent study conducted at University Medical Center in New Orleans examined the economic consequences of a career in burn surgery compared to other surgical specialties. The study used net present value (NPV) calculations to assess the financial aspects of a career in burn surgery, taking into account factors such as salary, medical school debt, taxes, and career duration. The research found that burn surgeons face economic challenges, with a 2-year burn fellowship performing the worst in terms of NPV. However, the study did not consider the productivity of burn surgeons relative to other specialties. The findings highlight the need for prospective burn surgeons to carefully consider the economic implications of their career choice. [Extracted from the article] |
