A recent study conducted at Maggiore Hospital in Italy examined surgical options for treating acute left-sided colonic emergencies. The study included over 1,200 patients from various centers and compared two procedures: Hartmann's procedure (HP) and colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA). The findings indicated that while HP is still commonly used, RPA should be considered the preferred surgical option. The choice of treatment depends on factors such as patient characteristics, timing of surgery, and surgeon expertise. [Extracted from the article] |
