A recent study conducted by researchers at the Universitat de Barcelona in Spain has found that magnetic resonance imaging-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRIgLITT) can be a safe and effective treatment for refractory epilepsy in pediatric patients. The study focused on a 14-year-old boy with epilepsy caused by a perinatal ischemic event. The patient underwent temporo-parieto-occipital disconnection (TPO) surgery using MRIgLITT assisted by a robotic arm, and experienced no seizures or additional neurological deficits 24 months after the surgery. This research provides a proof-of-principle case report and highlights the surgical nuances of using this technique. [Extracted from the article] |
