Drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) is a growing problem worldwide that is typically buried in landfills. This study thus proposes the use of calcined WTS as a novel supplemental cementitious material, based on an analysis of the effects of adding it to Portland cement composites. Experimental research was done on using WTS to partially replace cement at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% by weight. The findings from testing these mixes revealed that while specimens with 10 and 15% modified WTS exhibited improvements in compressive strength, grout with 5% calcined WTS provided the best 28-day compressive strength. The calcined WTS demonstrated the necessary pozzolanic activity and interacted with cement hydration products to improve microstructural compactness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
