A review on the effective use of geosynthetic reinforcement to increase soil bearing capacity.

Abstrakt: Soils often have weak tensile strength, and the primary objectives of reinforcement of the soil are to decrease vertical settlement and side deformation, to increase stability, and to increase bearing capacity. The use of polymeric materials is one technique utilised to achieve these goals, and well-known methods of soil reinforcement thus include geosynthetic reinforcement. As compared to conventional designs, the utilisation of such techniques can dramatically improve soil performance while lowering expenses, and this study thus offers a review of previous studies examining how adding geotextiles or geogrids can affect the bearing capacity of the soil to determine key relevant information regarding the number of layers, the depth of the first strengthened layer, and the distance between layers required to support weak soil. The capacity of the soil to carry loads has been shown to significantly increase using such additions, with a noticeable decrease in footing displacement. Improved soil outcomes due to restricted side areas and significant improvement in the reinforcement factor also make such additions more sustainable solutions than simply enduring unsupported soil. Geosynthetic reinforcement is thus recommended for the building of embankments and the installation of railroad tracks, among other supportive applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
