Abstrakt: This article, titled "Notarial Records of Sales of Enslaved Individuals in Santiago de Chile, 1773-1821," provides a dataset of transactions involving enslaved individuals in Santiago de Chile between 1773 and 1821. The dataset includes information on the buyers, sellers, and enslaved persons, as well as the value of each transaction. It reveals that while the exact number of enslaved people in Chile's past is uncertain, their presence can be traced back to the Spanish incursion in the region. Unlike other Spanish colonies in the Caribbean, Chile's economy was not built on plantation agriculture, and enslaved individuals were engaged in placer mining, agriculture, and various artisan workshops. The dataset serves as evidence of the active market for enslaved individuals in Chile during this period. [Extracted from the article]
