The article discusses the challenges faced by pig producers in the United States over the past few years, which have been described as the worst sustained economic period in modern pig production history. These challenges include trade tariffs, the outbreak of African swine fever in China, the COVID-19 lockdowns, inflationary periods, and changes in energy policies and regulations. The author offers four key lessons for pig producers to navigate future down cycles, including focusing on controllable factors, improving strengths and weaknesses, making responsible and realistic management decisions, and prioritizing feed program design and execution.
