This article discusses the process of habituation in moor macaques (Macaca maura) and how it is affected by changes in group composition. The researchers conducted a study on a wild group of moor macaques in Indonesia, observing their responses to human researchers during two habituation phases. They found that the macaques were less likely to show neutral responses and be tolerant of researcher proximity at the start of the second habituation phase compared to the first. However, the macaques in the second phase habituated more quickly overall, suggesting that previous experience of neutral exposure to researchers facilitated the habituation process. The researchers also noted the need for further study on social learning and individual differences in habituation, as well as the potential risks for habituated groups.
