A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Bern in Switzerland examined the long-term outcomes of using one-piece mini dental implants (MDIs) to retain mandibular implant overdentures (IODs). The study followed 20 participants with horizontally atrophied mandibles who received complete dentures and four MDIs. After a 10-year follow-up, the study found a 100% implant survival rate and a mean marginal bone level alteration of -1.12 mm. The prosthetic survival rate after 10 years was 93%. The study concluded that one-piece MDIs with O-ring attachments are a reliable treatment option for horizontally atrophied mandibles, with high implant and prosthetic survival rates.
