Abstrakt: A study conducted by researchers at the University of Southern Florida investigated the impact of preoperative comorbidities on weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery. The study analyzed data from 440 patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery and collected information on patient demographics, comorbidities (including depression, anxiety, diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, and hypothyroidism), and body weight at baseline and 1 year postoperatively. The study found that patients with a higher baseline BMI, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and those who underwent sleeve gastrectomy had a smaller percent estimated body weight loss (%EBWL) in the first year after surgery. However, there was no statistically significant difference in %EBWL for patients with anxiety, depression, or obstructive sleep apnea. The study suggests that tighter control of certain comorbidities may be necessary to optimize weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery. [Extracted from the article]
