A recent study from South China University of Technology proposes a new method called edge-based relative entropy (ERE) to identify critical transitions in complex biological systems. The ERE method combines gene-gene interaction information with relative entropy to quantify the dynamic change in a biomolecular network and detect early-warning signals of drastic state transitions during disease progression. The study validated the method using simulated data and real biological datasets, and it effectively identified critical transition states of complex diseases at the network level. The research suggests that the ERE method has potential in personalized disease diagnosis and provides new prognostic biomarkers for further practical application. [Extracted from the article] |
