Abstrakt: A recent study conducted at the University Medical Center Regensburg in Germany examined the impact of sarcopenia (muscular atrophy) on the long-term survival of patients who underwent complex endovascular surgery for thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. The study analyzed CT images of 135 patients and classified them as sarcopenic or non-sarcopenic based on skeletal mass index (SMI) and total psoas muscle index (TPMI). The researchers found that sarcopenia did not affect long-term survival rates, but sarcopenic patients had a lower 30-day mortality rate and a higher risk of pulmonary complications postoperatively. This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between sarcopenia and surgical outcomes for aortic aneurysms. [Extracted from the article]
