A study conducted at the University of California in Davis examined the effects of immortalization on lung cancer cells. Immortalized cells, which are commonly used in biological experiments, may have different characteristics compared to primary cells due to the introduction of genes that enhance proliferation. The researchers compared a human lung cancer primary cell line with a CDK4-transformed cell line and found significant differences in the expression of N-glycans and proteomic profiles. The study also observed changes in N-glycosylation over time in the CDK4-transformed cells. These findings provide valuable insights for adapting cell lines to better resemble in vivo conditions.
