This article, published in the journal Endoscopy, examines the factors that contribute to radiation exposure in patients during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The study analyzed data from 375 patients who underwent ERCP and measured radiation doses, including cumulative radiation dose, dose area product, fluoroscopy time, and number of fluoroscopy shots. The results showed that the nature of the indication, disease behavior, and complexity of the ERCP procedure influenced the amount of radiation exposure. The study suggests that radiation dose parameters can be used as quality indicators for ERCP, but further research is needed to establish standardized diagnostic reference levels.
