This article, published in the journal Endoscopy, examines the learning curve for achieving competency in emergency endoscopy for upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The study analyzed data from esophagogastroduodenoscopies performed between 2015 and 2022 at a university hospital. The results showed that a minimum of nine procedures with signs of recent hemorrhage is necessary before endoscopists can be considered proficient, and a minimum of 51 procedures is needed before they can perform emergency procedures without supervision. Implementing recommendations on minimum numbers of emergency endoscopies in education programs could improve trainees' confidence and competency in managing acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
