This article, published in the journal Endoscopy, examines the factors associated with difficult biliary stones (DBS) in a tertiary health center in South America, specifically in Colombia. The study used a case-control nested in a cohort design and analyzed various factors such as age, Charlson index, pancreatitis, biliary duct diameter, stone diameter, multiple stones, impacted biliary stone, biliary duct stenosis, and the disproportion between the size of the distal bile duct and the stone. The results showed that factors such as Charlson index, large stone diameter, number of stones, impacted biliary stone, biliary duct stenosis, and the disproportion between the size of the distal bile duct and the stone were associated with the presence of DBS. Biliary duct stenosis and possibly pancreatitis were identified as potential protective factors for DBS. The authors suggest that these findings should inform resource allocation for the treatment of DBS. [Extracted from the article] |
