This article, published in the journal Endoscopy, explores the use of lignocaine spray in minimizing discomfort during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). The study, conducted in a regional hospital in Hong Kong, retrospectively analyzed data from patients who underwent EGDs between October 2022 and June 2023. The researchers categorized patients into four groups based on the number of lignocaine spray puffs and the duration of the spray. They found that more lignocaine spray puffs resulted in more significant discomfort during the procedure, while the duration of the spray did not make a difference. The study also identified several factors associated with significant discomfort, including fewer lignocaine spray puffs, older age, male sex, absence of significant anxiety, and a diagnosis of gastritis. Overall, the findings suggest that using fewer lignocaine spray puffs may help minimize discomfort during EGDs. [Extracted from the article] |
