Abstrakt: Gossip in the workplace is often seen as unproductive or deviant, but recent research suggests that it has a more complex impact on relationships. The perception of the recipient of gossip plays a crucial role in determining whether it leads to friendship or undermines workplace relationships. The intentions of the gossiper, as interpreted by the recipient, can either strengthen trust and collegial relationships or decrease trust and prevent friendship. Negative gossip, when perceived as genuine, can actually be a stronger way of building friendships than positive gossip.
