This article highlights the recent rediscovery of wild giant clams, specifically the True Giant Clam Tridacna gigas, in the Sulu Archipelago of the Philippines. The population of T. gigas has declined in recent years, but efforts have been made to restore it through hatchery production and the establishment of sanctuaries. However, the study found evidence of widespread harvesting of giant clams in the southernmost islands, posing a conservation challenge. The article emphasizes the importance of conserving giant clams and the surrounding reefs for the health of marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. [Extracted from the article] |
