Researchers at the West Cancer Center have reported new data on laryngectomy, specifically focusing on the occurrence of pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) following total laryngectomy (TL). PCF is a common complication that can lead to longer hospital stays and delays in returning to an oral diet. The study found that 18.2% of patients who underwent salvage TL with Montgomery salivary bypass tube placement developed PCF. The occurrence of PCF was not associated with factors such as previous treatment, extent of pharyngeal defect, or margin status. This research provides valuable insights into the prevention and management of PCF in laryngectomy patients. [Extracted from the article] |
