A recent study conducted in Hong Kong explored the challenges faced by physiotherapy services when treating a 14-year-old male with cystic fibrosis (CF) and severe pulmonary exacerbation. The patient was put on venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) and a mechanical ventilator. The study found that sputum clearance techniques, inspiratory muscle training, and physical rehabilitation were successfully implemented during the patient's 40-day intervention period. The researchers concluded that with careful observance and alternative techniques, airway clearance and physical rehabilitation can be achieved in CF patients on VV-ECMO.
