This article explores the inclusion of civil society organizations (CSOs) in international organizations (IOs) as a means of democratizing global governance. However, empirical research shows that CSOs often face exclusion and inequality within IOs, with economically powerful actors having greater access and influence. The article takes a practice theoretical perspective to understand the everyday dynamics of civil society participation in global governance and the potential for democratization. While civil society participation can reproduce, contest, and potentially transform global governance, it often leads to conformity with existing organizational practices rather than substantive change. The authors suggest that a different approach to democratic governance may be needed to challenge prevailing organizational logics. [Extracted from the article] |
