Abstrakt: This article discusses the disappearance of green spaces in Cairo and how it is portrayed in the novels "In the Eye of the Sun" by Ahdaf Soueif and "Chronicle of a Last Summer" by Yasmine El Rashidi. It explores the reasons behind this loss, such as population growth and the informal economy, and the theoretical frameworks of ecocriticism and the right to the city. The analysis of the novels reveals the protagonists' observations of the degradation of Cairo's urban landscape and their feelings of alienation due to the loss of green spaces. The novels also examine the relationship between politics, urban environments, and the environment, criticizing the government for neglecting aesthetic considerations and failing to provide affordable housing. However, there is a sense of hope in El Rashidi's novel as it portrays a political event that leads to a newfound sense of agency and activism among the characters. Overall, the novels highlight the importance of political agency and environmental justice in urban environments. [Extracted from the article]
