Abstrakt: Under the Far North conditions, some hydraulic structures with restricted water areas (inner harbors, docks, river structures, etc.) can be affected by the thermal expansion of ice due to changes in air temperature. The ice load due to thermal expansion can be significant when ice is restrained from at least two sides (restricted by or located between dock walls, neighboring berths, a port and an opposite bank, ice barriers near berths, etc.). Calculations of the thermal expansion of ice are required by Russian regulations and are obligatory for checking the strength of hydraulic structures. The SP 38.1330.2018 document has considerably changed the method of determining the ice load due to thermal expansion, which also affects the results of calculations. Such changes may result in an increase or a decrease in the margin of safety related to the uncertainty of calculations. The new method in SP 38.1330.2018 is considered and compared with the previous recommendations in SP 38.1330.2012 and available experimental data. Results obtained with different methods are compared, and features of calculation that affect the results substantially, but are not disclosed in SP 38.1330.2018 are considered.
